about

I started this project of making field recordings in early 2015. Using either a Zoom recorder or just an iPhone, I’ve been recording my guitars in a variety of spaces, both close to home and far away.

I’ve compiled more than five years of acoustic field recordings into the Acoustic Sanctuary project, and it releases on October 20, 2020 in five volumes. The total lengthof this project is around 12 hours.

In this release I’ve recorded acoustic improvisations on six and 12 string guitars, resonator guitars, banjos, steel guitar and ukulele as close as my kitchen table and as far as Tokyo, Japan.

The music was recorded next to a creek in Kentucky, the ocean in Monterey, a room filled with gongs, my dad’s porch swing, during a protest march, during a heavy rainstorm, at the cemetery where several generations of my family are resting, an abandoned library in Bellingham Washington and many other settings.

The audio is raw. There’s been no sweetening of the sound. No reverb or compression. Sometimes there’s traffic and dogs, and throughout the project my daughter’s voice will appear as a 7 year old, other times as a 10 year old and all points in between.

This is a personal project for me, kind of an audio journal but with a guitar instead of a pen and paper. Of all the music I’ve ever made, this is the one that I’d like to be remembered for.

Thanks for listening.
