"This recording features Ross Hammond on guitar & lap steel, Lisa Mezzacappa on bass and John Hanes on drums. Both Lisa and John hail from the Bay Area. Mr. Hanes has worked with Henry Kaiser and was once in Pearl Harbor & the Explosions. Ms. Mezzacappa has worked with Vinny Golia, Aram Shelton & Darren Johnston plus she has a couple of great discs out as a leader on Clean Feed and Leo. Three of the pieces here are solo recordings by Hammond in a studio while the rest if the trio recorded live.
The opening piece "Immigration" is solo lap steel and it is eerie, sounding like a wheezing organ drone with selective ghostly slide notes. Ross most often writes pieces which are at a moderate tempo and never too quick. This gives him time to stretch out and savor each note of his trusty, organic rock/jazz guitar. His slightly sustained tone and subtle way of bending notes shows him to be a tasteful player. He has selected a fine rhythm team that support him without ever overdoing it in any way. "What's Spanish for Poet?" is a sublime solo acoustic guitar piece that fits nicely in the middle of the more intense trio action. Ross takes a stunning solo on "Spam Misubi" which shows that he is one of the most under-rated guitarists around. For those of you who appreciate jazz/rock (but not fusion) guitar at its best, this one is for you."
